KEY POINTS:
A 32-year-old man was remanded in custody when he appeared in Dunedin District Court charged with yesterday's murder of a woman in the city.
Police said Sophie Kate Elliott, 22, suffered numerous injuries from a sharp instrument when attacked at her home in the suburb of Ravensbourne.
Judge Paul Kellar granted the man interim name suppression when remanding him to reappear in court next Thursday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Kallum Croudis earlier said Ms Elliott's mother called police to their Ravensbournehome about 12.30pm yesterday.
Mr Croudis applauded the actions of a sole police officer who was first on the scene, and who entered the house and arrested the alleged offender.
"That policeman's actions are particularly noteworthy in that he acted swiftly and decisively to ensure that no further injury occurred to any person," Mr Croudis said.
A post mortem was to be carried out this morning, but Mr Croudis said Ms Elliott had received numerous injuries from a sharp instrument.
He would not say what weapon had been used until the scene examination was complete.
A team of 20 investigators was working on the case.
Neighbours told the Otago Daily Times the woman's family had lived in the area for about 10 years and were "lovely" people.
One neighbour said yesterday's events were beyond belief.
"It's just so unbelievable ... so hard to comprehend."
