A 27-year-old man appeared in court today facing charges relating to the death of a 2-year-old girl in Hawera on Friday.
The Hawera man was granted interim name suppression and remanded on bail without plea when he appeared before judge Chris Sygrove this morning.
He has been ordered to appear in the High Court at New Plymouth on Friday, July 17.
Police allege the man caused the death of the child by an unlawful act, namely an assault, and thereby committed manslaughter.
The man was arrested after emergency services attended a Hawera address late on Friday night. Ambulance staff were unable to revive the child at the scene.
