A 59-year-old man and a dog have died at the scene of a car crash in Marton this morning.
Police said the man from the Rangitïkei area drove his Toyota Rav 4 into the path of a Nissan Terrano at the intersection of Williamsons Line and Makirikiri Road around 6:20am.
He was trapped in his vehicle by the resulting collision.
Fire Service personnel worked to free him and the Palmerston North rescue helicopter was dispatched but the he died at the scene.
A dog travelling in the Toyota also died.
The driver of the Nissan, from Wanganui, was taken to Wanganui Hospital with minor injuries.
The Serious Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
