Joseph Reekers' change of plea has lifted a great weight off the family of Auckland murder victim Marie Jamieson, say police.
Reekers changed his plea in the High Court at Auckland today and admitted murdering Ms Jamieson in February, 2001.
He was remanded in custody to be sentenced in April.
Ms Jamieson's naked body was found behind a factory building in Ranui, west Auckland, on February 19, 2001.
Reekers was charged last year as a result of advances in DNA technology and was due to stand trial in Auckland on April 12, 2010.
Detective Inspector Steve Wood, who headed the original inquiry, said the change of plea was a surprise, although it had been discussed for several weeks.
"It certainly was a surprise when we first heard it might be a possibility."
The plea was a relief to Ms Jamieson's family because it meant they did not have to endure a trial.
Mr Woods said the result sent a clear message to criminals that police would never give up and a murder file would never close.
"With homicides we have a very good record of resolution and we don't give up. With the passing of time and technology (improvements) it is becoming easier.
"Those few who are out there that are responsible for such crimes need to keep a wary eye out because we don't close those files."
