A Greymouth man has been ordered to pay $600 to the SPCA after admitting kicking his pitbull-cross dog at least six times.
Jay Leslie Pattinson, 28, pleaded guilty in the Greymouth District Court to charges of cruelty to an animal, disorderly behaviour and possessing a knife.
Judge Edward Ryan was told the attack caused the dog to cower and tremble. When bystanders told Pattinson to stop, he abused them.
Pattinson said he lost the plot when he discovered the dog had chewed a leather motorcycle seat.
Counsel Richard Bodle said Pattinson and the animal were inseparable and he had been allowed to keep it.
