A driver who drove a stolen car at 250km/h terrifying his German hitchhiker passenger has pleaded guilty in Christchurch District Court.
Nicholas Raymond Hunter Brundell, 23 and unemployed, admitted unlawfully taking a black Ford Falcon from Christchurch, reckless driving, and failing to stop for a police car using its flashing lights and siren, the Christchurch court news website reported.
He has also admitted a burglary in Normans Road, Christchurch, unlawfully taking another car, stealing copper pipe from properties in Rangiora, and breach of prison release conditions in Timaru after an earlier jail term.
Three further charges against Brundell were withdrawn.
Judge Philip Moran remanded him in custody for sentence on June 27.
Police said that Brundell and two other men picked up a hitchhiking Bavarian tourist Alex Nehr in Waipara, North Canterbury, on September 17.
The vehicle sped up to 250km/h and became airborne at times after an unmarked police car turned and followed.
Mr Nehr was let out of the car at Culverden and noted its registration number.
