KEY POINTS:
A 33-year-old Auckland man today pleaded guilty in Auckland District Court to raping a woman six years ago.
Pop Tanupou E'-Moala Aholelei was arrested in August last year for the 2001 rape of a woman in her 20s in the Parnell Rose Gardens.
Aholelei, a machinery operator from One Tree Hill, was remanded in custody for sentencing on July 20.
Auckland police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said Aholelei's arrest was one of the first by the police adult sexual assault team, established in July last year to investigate adult sex crime files.
Ms Hegarty said Aholelei's victim, who now lives overseas, was abducted from O'Connell St in Auckland at about 11.45pm on August 25, 2001, and driven to the gardens where she was raped.
She later approached a security guard at a nearby hotel who called police.
