A man allegedly stole a car, crashed it, and then tried to steal another car from people who had stopped to help.
Detective Sergeant Zane Smith alleged a 19-year-old man from Welcome Bay accosted a man in the Tauranga Hospital carpark and demanded the keys to his vehicle before 8am yesterday.
The alleged offender took off towards the Kaimai Range, where he crashed.
Two people stopped to help and he allegedly tried to take their car.
After a struggle, a police officer arrested the man.
The unemployed man was charged with robbery, aggravated assault and demand with menace and is due in court today.
