A man accused of trying to board a Cook Strait ferry bound for Picton with a car he was supposed to be just taking for a test drive has been remanded on bail.
Christchurch student Pax Nigel Jones, 56, appeared in Wellington District Court today charged with fraud, this morning.
Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Colin McGillvray told the court Jones had taken the Holden Calais for a test drive from a dealership yesterday.
Jones failed to return with the car and police discovered him trying to load the vehicle onto the Bluebridge Ferry, he said.
Mr McGillvray said after Jones was arrested he refused to give his fingerprints or have his photograph taken.
Jones told Judge Mike Behrens he had not committed any crime "in this country and this nation".
He said the reason he refused to have his fingerprints or photograph taken was because he did not want to incur a record against him.
Judge Behrens said if it turned out he had not committed a crime, his fingerprint record and photograph would be destroyed.
Jones agreed to have his prints and photo taken, and was remanded on bail to reappear on November 28.
