Man accused of Te Puke stabbings remains behind bars

A 35-year-old man accused of stabbing three Te Puke men remains behind bars.

A Tauranga judge refused the man bail, citing concerns that he posed an extremely high flight risk.

Gurcharan Singh, of Te Puke, faced three counts of wounding with reckless disregard for the safety of others when he re-appeared in Tauranga District Court this afternoon.

Police were called to a Boucher Avenue house last Friday evening where they say they found the three stabbed men, one of whom remains in Tauranga Hospital intensive care unit.

Police strongly opposed bail citing concerns that if bailed Singh - an Indian national in the country on a work visa - posed an extremely high flight risk given the inevitable jail sentence he faced if convicted of even one of the offences.

But Singh's lawyer Olivia Brittain argued that stringent bail conditions, including her client surrendering his passport, being bailed to a Papamoa or Brookfield address and his movements restricted, would negate police concerns.

But Judge Peter Rollo said he was satisfied there was just cause for Singh's continued detention at this time and refused bail.

Singh is yet to enter pleas to the charges but Ms Brittain signalled that her client intends defending the allegations. He is due back in court on August 29.
