Man accused of killing baby bailed

A man charged with killing his girlfriend's five-month-old baby has been granted bail.

Trent Hapuku, 22, had been remanded in custody following a hung jury after a week-long High Court trial in Napier earlier this month. Justice Jill Mallon ordered a retrial when the jury failed to return a verdict after deliberating for 10 hours.

Hapuku is accused of fatally assaulting Mikara Reti in Flaxmere on January 11, and has been charged with manslaughter. He is due to appear in Napier District Court again next week.
