A drone operator accused of flying in controlled airspace will stand trial next year in what could prove to be a landmark case.
Simon Roy Reeve, 38, is the first person to be charged under new Civil Aviation Authority rules.
The Kaiapoi man denies operating a Phantom 2 remotely piloted aircraft system in controlled airspace at Pines Beach in North Canterbury without prior authorisation on January 5 and 20 this year.
He also denies a charge of operating the unmanned aerial vehicle on January 5 in a manner that "caused unnecessary endangerment to people".
At a pre-trial callover at Christchurch District Court today, Reeve's appearance was excused.
Defence counsel Rupert Glover said it was heading for a three-day judge alone trial.
