KEY POINTS:
Police say they will charge a 20-year-old man with burglary and further charges may follow, after a 99-year-old woman was badly injured in her Palmerston North home.
Police Central District communications manager spokeswoman Kim Perks said they had not yet been able to complete a full interview with the victim, who remains in hospital having been kept in overnight for observation. She was suffering from bruising and trauma.
Police hoped to work closely with her over the next couple of days to find out what happened.
The charges follow reports of screaming from a house in suburban Roslyn early yesterday morning and the discovery of the injured woman.
Further charges may be laid depending on results of the investigation.
The man was to appear in Palmerston North District Court this morning.
