A Gisborne man alleged to have bitten a policeman has been further remanded in custody and will reappear in court on Friday.
Nicholas George Smith, 39, entered no pleas in the Gisborne District Court today to charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and threatening to kill.
Police allege the constable was left with broken skin from bite marks to his neck and leg, and was punched in the face, after an "unprovoked and extremely violent attack" on January 5.
The policeman and a policewoman were investigating a domestic incident in Dalrymple Street last Thursday.
The constable was treated at Gisborne Hospital.
