A man charged with the daylight bashing of a long-serving Nelson police officer has appeared in court to apply for electronically-monitored bail.
Matei Peti, 23, allegedly attacked the officer after he and a colleague tried to stop Peti attacking a woman outside Nelson Public Hospital late last month.
The officer, a senior constable with 40 years' experience, required 40 stitches to his face and dental reconstruction surgery.
Peti has pleaded not guilty to charges of male assaults female and wounding with intent to injure.
He applied for electronically-monitored bail when he appeared in Nelson District Court today.
