The death of a man found on top of a smouldering fire heap near Hamilton today is not being treated as suspicious, police say.
Police began an investigation after the 76-year-old man was found dead at a property in Ohaupo, 17km south of Hamilton, about 8.30am.
The man had last been seen by his son at 8pm yesterday, but it was believed he died some time between 7.30 and 8.30 this morning.
Police arrived about 8.48am at the Ohaupo property where the man's body was found.
Sergeant Chris Greenwood said the man's body had been extensively burnt but the exact cause of death had yet to be determined.
The matter has been referred to the coroner.
