A 70-year-old man died and two people received moderate injuries in a crash between a motorbike and a car near Thames yesterday afternoon.
The man died at the scene at Whakatete Bay, an ambulance spokeswoman said.
The highway was blocked in both directions for a time, with police advising motorists to avoid the area.
The serious crash unit was investigating.
