Makoura College set a new high in the latest series of matches in the junior girls division of the Wairarapa secondary schools basketball competition.
Their 115-5 thumping of Solway College was the biggest score ever returned in their grade. Darian Walker top-scored with 34, followed by Ngakita Matapuku (30) and Te Rina Boyce (28).
As the final scoreline would indicate, Makoura, coached by Georgie Lologa, dominated from the tip-off and were very impressive with the slickness of their passing and accurate shooting. The three leading scorers showed the way with strong support from O'Sharna Wiremu, Jemma Gallon-Puhara, Georgia Hutchby-Way and Neve Tufuga.
The talking point in the senior boys division was the second successive defeat of defending champions Chanel College, this time at the hands of Kuranui College, 33-22.
Finn Shepherd had a superb match for Kuranui on defence, picking up several well-timed rebounds and maintaining consistent pressure on the Chanel attackers. Also shining on defence was Heta Phillips while Conor Henare was the spearhead of the attack, scoring 12 points. Chanel's top scorer was Ryan Brown (14). In the other senior boys' fixture Wairarapa College made light work of Wairarapa College B, winning by 97-11. Michael McDermott, Mac Hepburn and Gabriel Poona all scored 18 points for the As.
