Last month the annual Cultural and Sports Award Ceremony was held at Makoura College.
A large number of parents, coaches and supporters took the time to attend.
The guest speaker was Michael Wilson, who entertained the audience with his stories of acting, including being a stunt double for Worzel Gummidge. While Michael has a lifetime of experience in acting, drama and radio he also told us about his sporting interests and achievements.
Michael stressed the importance of coaches, tutors, officials and parents who put a huge amount of time into helping young people achieve their sporting and cultural goals.
Congratulations to all the award winners as well as every student who participates in the wide variety of sporting and cultural activities at Makoura College.
The Sporting Captains for 2006 will be Nicole Lister and Tereina McLean-Rimene, congratulations to them both.
CULTURAL AWARDS
Achievement in Visual Arts:

Danielle Jones: Danielle is very consistent in her creative endeavour. She demonstrates a high level of commitment to her work, always meets self imposed high standards. Danielle has made consistent gains in achievement in her work this year.
Charlotte Melser: Charlotte has demonstrated real commitment to her work. She regularly uses out of school time to pursue ideas. She has continued to challenge herself and her thinking pushing beyond boundaries.
Katherine Sandford: Katherine demonstrates a very high degree of technical ability in painting. She has great self discipline, initiative and commitment to her work.
Outstanding Performance in kapahaka:
Chelsea Rimene: Chelsea receives her award for best improved member of kapahaka. Chelsea has competed in only a few competitions but has excelled each time. She demonstrated a high level of commitment and an enthusiastic willingness to learn about her culture. Chelsea continually challenges herself with quality standards rising to a higher level each time.
Barri Cooper Rimene: Barri demonstrates a passion for Kapahaka which manifests in her stage presence. She maintains a high level of commitment and is consistent with every performance. Barri strives for excellence in the field of Kapahaka, setting a high standard for upcoming students.
Vaea Peterson: Vaea consistently demonstrates a high level of commitment to learning about his tikanga Maori through kapahaka. This year he was chosen as the boys' leader ? a role that seems to come naturally to him. Vaea has shown that he can command respect, has considerable mana and is a fantastic role model for others.

SUPREME MUSIC AWARDS
Tom Sellars: Tom is a year 10 students who has performed with both junior and senior students at Music Extravaganzas. He has achieved success with the Australian Music Examinations Board Grade 5 Piano Exam and also plays saxophone. Tom has successfully attained NCEA Level 1 Music. He is well respected by his peers and is an example of fine musicianship.
Vaea Peterson: Vaea is a year 11 student who has lead fellow students and guided them to performance level. Vaea is a very accomplished musician capable of playing saxophone, keyboard, guitar, bass and percussion to a high standard. Vaea is consistent in his musical endeavours, has performed with both juniors and seniors at the Music Extravaganzas and is well respected by his peers. Vaea has attained NCEA Level 1 Music and is one of our fine examples of musicians at Makoura.

The Makoura junior boys' rugby team.
This team played all their games with dedication. They completed the season with only one loss. The team members were committed and always played fair. The team went on to win the Wairarapa U15 grade.

Junior Sportswoman of the Year:
Sam Parker: Sam has had a passion for horses from a young age. She has completed in many equestrian events. Her passion has seen her develop the skills for retraining problem horses. At the moment she is specialising in show jumping The skill that she has been developing, is often not start to develop until you are well into to your twenties. Her reputation has been acknowledged by the equestrian community, with Sam being paid to train and exercise horses. She is only 13. Sam is also involved in girls' soccer, netball and athletics
JUNIOR SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR:
Carlin Peterson: Carlin is involved in a number of sporting codes. He has excelled in swimming. During the 2005 swimming season Carlin has made two of the finals in the Wellington long course championships, with one being a podium finish, and made the finals in two of the short course events. He has swum at the Manawatu summer age champs and gained placings in seven of the races entered. He has received 6 gold medals at the Division III Championships. On the local scene Carlin has gained two first places in the intercollegiate swimming championships. He is also the Carterton Swimming Club age champion for 2005. Has completed his fourth season as a Wairarapa swim team representative.
In bowls, Carlin has represented Wairarapa in the singles at the Lower North Island competition. He has come 5th in the regional qualifying championship. Carlin was a member of the pair that came runner-up in the Wairarapa Secondary Schools pairs competition.
Carlin has also represented Makoura College in athletics, and cross country. He plays also basketball, soccer and tennis for the college in his spare time.
SENIOR SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR
Samantha Gibbs: Samantha has been committed to being involved in all the sports she could squeeze in to her busy schedule. Samantha has been the Makoura girls' sports captain. Her sport involvement has been as captain of the girls' hockey team, netball senior A team, volleyball team. She has also played or represented the college in the following sports: Smallbore rifle shooting, girls' rugby, indoor netball, cricket, athletics, cross country, canoe polo. At the start of the holidays Samantha was selected into the Secondary Girls Hurricanes team. Samantha plays all her sports with a passion and a commitment to fair play.
SENIOR SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR
Kyzen MacDonald: Kyzen's chosen sport is canoe polo. This is a sport he has excelled in. He has been involved at all levels of this sport from coaching, playing and refereeing. Kyzen has been involved with the Wairarapa regional men's team the "Mauraders". He coached and played in this team this year. The team played in the national league and came sixth in the senior open grade. He has been selected and now played for the central regional U21 canoe polo team. On selection he was also made captain. This team played in the New Zealand inter-regionals in mid September. During the 2005 year Kyzen was also selected to represent New Zealand in the NZ U21 canoe polo team. He has also been made captain of this team. The NZ U21 team played in the Oceania Champs in Christchurch late September this year. Kyzen has not restricted himself to playing. He also has been involved in the local secondary level in coaching. He has coached Wairapa development boys' canoe polo team, the Makoura College senior open team, Makoura girls' senior team, the Solway College senior girls' team. He was the assistant coach for the Wairarapa girls' canoe polo team. Kyzen has not limited his sporting achievements or involvement to canoe polo. He has been involved in volleyball. He has represented the college at the intercollegiate cross country event. Played soccer in a 1st division men's team and also played for the college team, and has assisted coaching a girls' soccer team. Kyzen has been a good representative of the college and filled the position of Makoura boys' sports Captain well.
