Opaki School pupils, staff and supporters braved a stiff southerly wind at the opening ceremony of a new $30,000 adventure playground and confidence course at the school on Thursday.
Principal Dave Finlayson said fundraising for the playground started last year with an auction that raised $8000.
The Friends of Opaki School group had provided half the cost of the new area. Major sponsors included Fulton Hogan, Trust House, Mitre 10 Mega, and 14 individual supporters. The opening yesterday acknowledged the fundraising efforts.
Mr Finlayson said totara saplings were also planted near the playground to represent the renamed syndicates at the school and Rangitane O Wairarapa cultural adviser Mike Kawana blessed the trees and the playground.
