A DEPLETED Wairarapa were beaten outright by Manawatu in the last of their Hawke Cup qualifying cricket matches played at Palmerston North over the weekend.
With several first string players unavailable including captain John Peters, vice-captain Ngatai Walker, in-form batsman Sam Curtis and the spearhead of the pace attack, Hayden Spierling.
Wairarapa started as rank underdogs but were in with a winning chance through most of the game
Only lower order batsman Andy Dodd (36) and Seth Rance (44) prospered when Wairarapa batted first and were all out for just 167. Dodd struck seven boundaries and Rance eight after the top order had failed to fire.
It was a similar story though in Manawatu's first innings. They started disastrously and at a remarkable 21-7 looked set to be dismissed for a paltry total but a 114 run seventh wicket partnership between Forgie (42) and Wylie (75) tuned things round and they were finally dismissed for 178.
It was opening bowlers Seth Rance and Richard Wylie who did most of the damage for Wairarapa with Rance taking 4-43 and Wylie 3-25
Wairarapa's second innings was a marked improvement on the first with seven of the batsmen getting into double figures and the team getting through to a respectable 243.
Opener Eddie Hopkins hit 11 fours in his 66, Cameron Stone seven fours in his 45 and newcomer Jeremy Anderson seven fours in his 36.
Wanganui were thus left 233 runs to get for the outright win and they looked a forlorn chance at 49-4 but again they dug themselves out of the hole, this time through some fine batting from Lompard (64), Baldwin (80 not out) and Forgie (28 not out). The target was reached with just the five wickets down.
The most successful of the seven bowlers used by Wairarapa were Robin James and Richard Wylie both of whom took two wickets
