Searching for a job can be a daunting task. With so many channels available, where do you begin?
If this is your first job search for a while, you could do worse than start with this Work and Income resource for job seekers.
First there's the general advice about the effort you'll need to put in ("On average, successful job applicants spend 11 hours a week looking for work") and the attitude you'll need to be successful ("To get the best result from your efforts, you have to want to find a job and be able to stick at it").
On the right-hand side are links to categories ranging from how Winz can help and finding seasonal employment to setting yourself up as self-employed.
You'll find out what you need to do before you contact Winz, a link to Winz's online job bank, information on transition to work grants and more. The page also explains what happens when you enrol and what your job seeker agreement might entail.
The job search help page includes useful tips on such things as where to look for jobs, what employers are looking for and how to contact employers. It points out that only around 30 per cent of jobs are advertised, while the other 70 per cent are found through networking. "Every contact could give you another job lead," it says. "Ask your friends and family how they got their jobs. They may have found out about them by talking to people."
The "Writing a CV" page answers basic questions about CVs and references and the job interviews page has advice on what to do before, during and after a job interview.
And for the unemployed who want to be their own boss, there's advice on how to set up in business.
