State Highway Two between Opotiki and Gisborne is currently closed in both directions due to a major slip in the Waioeka Gorge.
Contractors were at the scene to assess the slip and would return early tomorrow morning to start clearing the road, the New Zealand Transport Agency said.
Drivers are warned the road is expected to remain closed for most of tomorrow and possibly longer.
