KEY POINTS:
The price of diesel has dropped by a further six cents at all major petrol stations today but those wanting relief in the price of petrol will still have to wait.
The drop is the third in less than a week, following a drop of six cents on Tuesday and eight cents on Friday, and brings the price of diesel to 159.9 cents at Shell, BP, Mobil and Caltex. Gull is selling at one cent lower at 158.9.
Shell was the first to drop at 11.30am.
Spokeswoman Jackie Maitland said the decrease came after a fall in the international price of diesel.
She said it was the seventh time fuel prices had dropped since July 17 and Shell had lead all the drops.
BP spokeswoman Anita Ferguson said the price drop came on the back of a decrease in the international price.
Caltex spokeswoman Sharon Buckland said the price of petrol and diesel "decupled' earlier this year.
She said when petrol dropped in price, diesel did not and it wa now catching up.
Ms Buckland said there was no sudden drop in the international price but Caltex had responded to the "pattern".
Mobil spokesman Alan Bailey said competitors had driven the price down and Mobil was responding.
"We're not sure what is behind the move but we need to compete in the market place," Mr Bailey said.
