Widening work on Hamilton's Pukete Bridge begins today as the city council readies the bridge for a clip-on to make it four lanes.
It's the next step in the Wairere Drive section of a ring road project for Hamilton and is expected to take nine months to complete. The project is part of a major roading upgrade linking State Highway 1 from Te Rapa in the west to Cobham Drive in the south.
Two-lane Pukete Bridge crosses the Waikato River at the northern end of the city and links the west to Hamilton's fast-growing northern suburbs.
It was part of a 2km stretch between Wairere and Resolution Drives which will be widened to cope with the growing daily peak-hour traffic congestion.
A Hamilton City Council spokeswoman said it was planned to keep the bridge open to all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, while the work is carried out.
