KEY POINTS:
Six people had a lucky escape when a 4WD, campervan and truck-and-trailer unit laden with potting mix collided near Matamata yesterday.
The crash closed State Highway 27 at Ngarua, north of Waharoa, for more than four hours.
Three of six passengers in the vehicles received minor injuries when the collision happened at 10.40am, but none needed hospital treatment. Two of the vehicles rolled and police said it was "very lucky" that the worst injury was facial lacerations suffered by the truck driver.
"Everyone else ended up being good as gold," said Senior Constable Kenneth Ranger.
Mr Ranger said the collision occurred when the campervan and truck swerved to avoid the 4WD, which was turning into a driveway, but were unable to and the three vehicles collided.
The impact pushed the 4WD into a paddock, where it landed on its side, the truck jack-knifed and the trailer landed on the 4WD.
