A crackdown on booze-fuelled crime is behind an increased police presence in some of Auckland's most popular social spots this weekend.
Police will take a zero tolerance approach to combatting alcohol-induced criminal behaviour in recognised hot-spots including Mission Bay and Ponsonby, as they begin Operation Relentless.
More than 70 police and partner agency staff will be involved, and road checkpoints will be set up.
Last month cellphone footage of mass street brawls at various locations in the Auckland CBD went viral, and resulted in two men being hospitalised with serious injuries.
Following the fights Inspector Gary Davey said the behaviour was usual in the city, especially around Karangahape Rd and Ponsonby.
