A roadside fire near Mauriceville yesterday could have been much worse.
Masterton Fire Service were called to Dreyers Rock Rd about 2pm after a roadside bank with some pine trees and needles caught fire.
Wairarapa Rural Fire District deputy rural fire officer Stephen Siemonek said the fire did not take long to bring under control, although it could have been much more substantial, had it jumped the road to a cluster of pine trees.
"Luckily the farmland above was fairly grazed out," he said.
Mr Siemonek estimated the affected area to be about 300 square metres.
