The North Island main trunk railway is closed after a freight train derailed and caught fire near Hunterville station overnight.
The train, heading from Auckland to Wellington, came off the track within metres of the north Manawatu station about 4.15am.
Sparks from the derailment ignited one of the wagons, said Ontrack spokesman Kevin Ramshaw.
The local volunteer fire brigade managed to prevent the fire spreading to the rest of the train.
Mr Ramshaw said it was not yet known exactly what the wagon contained but he knew it was general goods, rather than hazardous goods.
While the track was not damaged, flames burnt some overhead wiring, closing the rail line until repairs could be made.
Mr Ramshaw said diesel locomotives should be able to travel through the area later this morning, but trains requiring overhead power could be held up until tomorrow,
Two northbound and two southbound freight trains will be affected by delays.
