Mahunga's teams in the Wellington interclub competition were playing away from home on Saturday and both returned with victories. Then the Junior Pennants team continued their run of good results with a victory over Castlepoint at home.
The division 7 team were up against Mornington, a course where the visiting teams rarely win. But Mahunga's team did extra well, recording a 10 to 4 win. After Saturday's win, Mahunga is still at the top of the table but now with an extended 3-point lead. Having played three of their five away matches, this team has already recorded two away wins and this should hold them in good stead for the remainder of the competition.
The division 11 team were playing at Wainuiomata, and again they excelled with an 11-4 win. The team had a 10-point lead before the current round, and they stay at the top of the table, but with the margin now reduced to 9 points.
Back at home, the club competition on Saturday was a Stableford round. In the second group, Nikaya Graham was again the star performer with 43 points, with Phillip Granich one point in arrears, while Bill Ousey took third on 41.
In the first group, Meki Lauvi led the way with a mere 36 points, followed by Neville Biel on 33 and Daniel Towgood on 32.
The Makes Cents nearest the pin went to Bill Ousey, and the Mitre 10 on the third went to Phillip Granich, while Ngaire Graham took the McAuley's Transport on the sixth hole, Meki Lauvi the Pak'n Save Masterton on the eighth and the All Teed Up on the fourth.
The junior pennants team were led by Nikaya Graham with 45 points, and with good scores also from Phillip Granich and Daniel Towgood, they had a comfortable double-digit margin over the Castlepoint team.
In the club par round, it was Maurice O'Reilly who took top billing with a score of 8 up, which was one better than Nikaya Graham, with Gavin Towgood and Steve Dick both finishing on 5 up, and Terry Fleet taking fifth place on 4 up. Gavin Towgood, Kevin Hunter, Geoff Peck, Paul Haxton and Layton Kawana had holes in two.
Monday saw Mahunga host a round of the Wellington Women's Silver Pennants competition, but the home team was unable to keep up the run on wins.
But last Friday, the Mahunga team in the Riverside Cup competition posted a 4-2 win.
On Tuesday, the veterans played in a competition for the highest nett scores. The overall winner was John Mudgway with a 68 nett in the men's second group, which was one more than Geoff Parker, while Ian Gemmill took third place in the group on 65. Roger Stenton took out the first men's group on 66 nett, from Graeme Bound on 64, while Ray Loader and Bevan Hefferen both had 63.
Jean Bayly headed the women's first group on 65 nett, with Janet Shaw and Yvonne Allsworth both on 63. The second group had Jocelyn Parker at the top with a 63 nett, from Daphne Jordan and Cilva Richmond on 61.
The women's nearest to the pins on the third and sixth holes went to Nooroa Rota, while the men's ones went to Ray Loader on the sixth and Blair Harvey on the seventh. Holes in two were recorded by Ray Loader, Bevan Hefferen, Alic Foreman and Nooroa Rota.
This coming Saturday has the men playing the finals of the Dove Trophy and Nicol Cup. The club competition for the rest of the field will be a medal round.
On Sunday, Mahunga hosts the latest round of the Marquis Shield competition, with their opponents being Featherston. The women's Tilson Salver will also be in action on Sunday, when they will be playing the Masterton Club at the Carterton course.
