A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck in the Kermadec Trench off the coast of the North Island overnight, however no tsunami has been generated.
The tremor was centred 330km south of the Kermadec Islands, 440km north-east of Te Araroa, 540km north-east of Whakatane, 630km north-east of Auckland, at a depth of 33km at 1.02am.
GNS Science said the quake was felt along the east side of the North Island, and was reportedly felt as far afield as Auckland and Christchurch.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue a tsunami warning following the quake.
