An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 has been reported in the Pacific Ocean east of Napier, about 500 km east of Gisborne and 630km east of Auckland.
The quake occurred at 7.53pm local time at a depth of 56km according to GeoNet.
No immediate reports of damage or a tsunami warning have been issued. It was reportedly felt in Patutahi.
