An earthquake GeoNet categorised as "severe" was felt widely across the South Island this morning.
The magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck 35 kilometres north of Milford Sound and was 20 kilometres deep.
The shake would have woken Central Otago residents at 4.23am, with most reports to GeoNet coming from residents in the region.
