Magnitude 5.0 quake strikes near Taupo

A magnitude 5 earthquake has struck in Taupo, GNS Science is reporting.

The quake struck at 1.46pm, and was centred 10km north of Taupo, at a depth of 100km.

GNS Science said the quake would have been widely felt in the North Island.
