A strong earthquake centred in Marlborough was felt as far away as Wellington this evening.
GeoNet said the magnitude 4.6 quake happened 16km underground.
A short sharp shake could be felt across the Cook Strait in downtown Wellington about 5.35pm.
The epicentre was 5km southeast of Seddon, GeoNet said.
A Fire Service southern communications staff member said firefighters had received no reports of damage related to the quake.
GeoNet defined the quake's intensity as "strong."
