KEY POINTS:
Lyttelton Port of Christchurch (LPC) remained closed today out of respect for long-serving employee Martin Sincock who was killed on the job last night.
Mr Sincock, 55, died instantly when a rope securing a coal ship to the port snapped and struck him.
"Our focus is providing support to Marty's family and work colleagues. This is a terrible tragedy and we have put in place support mechanisms to provide help wherever possible during this difficult time," LPC chief executive Peter Davie said.
The port was due to reopen tomorrow morning.
Police, Maritime New Zealand and the Department of Labour have all launched investigations.
