Lyn Patterson is Masterton's new mayor.
As of 3pm on Saturday Ms Patterson achieved 2839 votes, 297 ahead of incumbent mayor Garry Daniell and 674 votes ahead of challenger Gary Caffell, with 98 per cent of returned voting papers counted.
She also achieved the highest vote count for urban ward councillor, but her mayoralty success leads the way for newcomer Mark Harris, ranked 5th in the ward voting count, to step into the vacancy.
Earlier in the week the Times-Age ran a poll which suggested a neck-and-neck race between Mr Daniell and Ms Patterson, running at 37 per cent each, with Mr Caffell on 24 per cent.
Today, Ms Patterson secured 37 per cent, but Mr Caffell had improved on the poll with 28 per cent, while Mr Daniell had 33 per cent.
