Remy Kalma was happily cleaning out the garage when a car careered off the road, plunged 30 metres down a bank and ploughed into his home - a few steps from where he was standing.
"It certainly made me jump a bit," he said. "Five minutes before I was standing right there so I guess I'm lucky."
The car, driven by a man who made a quick exit when the Herald arrived, spun out of control on a corner of Beach Rd in Browns Bay.
It flew down an embankment before ramming into the house, owned by Mr Kalma's 85-year-old mother who was upstairs when the accident happened. The driver had "sore ribs" said Mr Kalma, but was otherwise unhurt and "very apologetic".
It is the second time in three months that a car has lost control on the bend and ended up at the Kalma household. Last time, the fall was broken by Mr Kalma's brother's car, which was written off.
Mr Kalma said the North Shore City Council had been investigating putting crash barriers on the bend.
"Perhaps now they'll realise it's a good idea to do it sooner rather than later."
Lucky escape as another car drops in on the Kalmas
