KEY POINTS:
A woman and her daughter had a lucky escape yesterday when their car windscreen was smashed by an object thrown from an overbridge on to the Auckland Southern Motorway.
Police are hunting the offenders after Tracy Mulqueen - accompanied by her 9-year-old, Storm Lee - was forced off the road when the object, believed to be a rock, hit her windscreen.
"It doesn't bear thinking about what could have happened ... My daughter could have been left motherless," Ms Mulqueen told One News.
She said she saw three people running from the scene.
Police spokesman Inspector Earle McIntosh said last night that by the time officers arrived, the offenders had "disappeared into the depths of South Auckland".
In August 2005, Taupo man Chris Currie was killed by an 8kg lump of concrete thrown by Ngatai Rewiti, 14, from a motorway overbridge. Rewiti was jailed for four years.
