The 33 deaths on New Zealand's roads last month equalled the lowest number for any July since records began nearly 30 years ago, statistics show.
The Land Transport Safety Authority said last month's road toll equalled those of July in 2001 and 1979.
Records began in 1965. The worst July since then was in 1989 when 72 people died on the roads.
"Even with the record low last month, we still averaged more than one person killed on this country's roads every day," director David Wright said in the statement.
The road toll for the seven months ended July was 253, the lowest since 1965.
"But let's not delude ourselves into thinking this problem is solved," Mr Wright said.
