The organiser of a rally against Auckland Regional Council's rates increases is putting on a brave face after a lower-than-expected turnout, radio news reports.
Up to 400 people, many of them pensioners, marched through central Auckland this afternoon, but initial expectations were for thousands, Newstalk ZB reported.
Many of the marchers were carrying placards, one reading: "Dump the ARC Leeches".
Organiser Elaine West told Newstalk ZB many people did not know it was happening, while others had sports commitments.
She says resistance to the ARC rates hike will continue, and many people are paying their rates under protest, Newstalk ZB reports.
