Toyota has kept the launch of its new four-wheel-drive Prado deliberately low-key because the premium petrol model will not be available until March.
Two diesel models will go on sale on Monday, the RV priced around $68,000 and the VX around $78,000.
Both are powered by an improved version of the four-cylinder 96kW/343Nm 3-litre, intercooled diesel engine found in the previous model.
A more sophisticated six-cylinder diesel was not available because it wouldn't run on the high sulphur content of New Zealand's fuel.
The six-cylinder petrol engine due in March is a 4-litre V6 and replaces the previous model's 3.4-litre unit.
The new V6 produces 179kW at 5200rpm and 376Nm of torque at 3800rpm.
The Prado sits on a longer wheelbase and has more interior space than the outgoing model, but it is not quite as tall and has a marginally lower ride height.
The RV and VX come with a lockable centre differential for off-road use.
But the VX gets most of the goodies, including dual front, side and curtain airbags, roof rails, and a host of electronic safety devices like traction control, a stability system, variable height and damping control.
