When Edendale, Southland, local Lois Heads had to decline involvement in another community service, she cried.
Mrs Heads reluctantly turned down an invitation to speak on Children's Day at the local church due to over-committing to netball coaching, sitting on school boards, involvement in the tennis club and Plunket, runninga dairy farm and looking after four children, including a son with disabilities.
Mrs Heads said it was important she gave back to the groups that have helped her children. In particular, she wants to invest in her children's education.
As a member of the Edendale School Board she championed the school's development through goal-setting, strategic planning and forming bonds with other local schools. She was also responsible for setting up an annual quiz fundraiser so the school is able to buy something on its "wishlist" each year.
Mrs Heads has been named a regional finalist in the Pride of New Zealand Awards, in the Lifetime Achievement category, for her dedication to the Edendale community.
"Over the last 20 years, she has been totally focused on giving back in whatever way she can to make her community one that is always inclusive and welcoming to all," her nominator said.
Mrs Heads went to school in a neighbouring Southland town, and moved to Edendale 25 years ago.
"Coming from a smaller community, people are more involved," Mrs Heads said.
Making sure things run well is a driving force behind Mrs Heads' involvement. While her social life can take a hit from all of her activities, her greatest friends have come via her volunteer roles.
Her family's support has also been crucial to her involvement in the community.
"I have strong family ties; they put up with a lot of late dinners."
