Auckland police launched a homicide investigation after finding a woman's body in a block of flats in Mt Eden yesterday evening.
Officers found a man and the dead woman in one unit of a block of eight flats in Shackleton Rd.
The man is believed to have called 111 and police were speaking to him last night.
Neighbours in the quiet street gathered as police cordoned off the flats and a house. Some said they heard a loud bang just before 5pm.
The officer in charge of the inquiry, Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley, said a full scene examination would begin today.
The death has sparked the third homicide investigation in New Zealand since Wednesday of last week.
Officers investigating the murders of Mona Morriss in Marton and Tania McKenzie in Wanganui are sharing information to see if the two slayings are linked.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Oxnam, heading the McKenzie inquiry, said Inspector Sam Hoyle of Wanganui was co-ordinating the information sharing but "there have been no links at this stage". Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Arnerich, who heads the Marton inquiry, said a link had not been ruled out.
