KEY POINTS:
A Lotto shopkeeper is in a serious condition in Auckland Hospital after being stabbed several times by an intruder.
Police say the incident happened at 5.20pm in the Auckland suburb of Avondale when the would-be customer came into the shop and stabbed the shopkeeper repeatedly in the upper body.
Shanti Lal told Newstalk ZB it was his 55-year-old brother who was stabbed.
Mr Lal said the wounds were to his brother's neck and back.
Police have reportedly arrested a young male at the scene.
The incident follows the appearance of an Otara liquor shop owner in the Manukau District Court this afternoon, charged with two counts of injuring with intent to injure, following a brawl fight outside his shop on Tuesday night.
Varinder Singh was remanded on bail following his appearance.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Pizzini would not give details on what happened outside the liquor shop on Tuesday night.
"The arrest serves as a reminder to all who take the law into their own hands that some circumstances cannot be justified," Mr Pizzini said.
He said further charges are expected to be laid against a 15-year-old allegedly involved in the incident and he couldn't rule out that others could also face charges.
Mr Pizzini said Mr Singh received a minor stab wound in his thigh while a young person had reasonably serious facial injuries including damage to his teeth and swelling to his nose and mouth area.
He said another young person had bruises on their shoulder.
On Thursday police said they were investigating everyone allegedly involved in a brawl.
Two Otara shop owners were stabbed in the fight and one youth was taken to hospital after receiving head injuries.
Police have earlier said weapons used in the fight included a fence paling, knives and a long bar or bamboo stick.
One of the shop owners reportedly used a hockey stick in the fight.
Details of the attack emerged on Wednesday. Mr Pizzini earlier told the media that the owner of a liquor shop approached a drunk youth who he suspected of shoplifting and a fight broke out shortly after.
Two liquor store owners were allegedly stabbed as they held one of the teenagers until police arrived.
