The great-grandson of a New Zealand soldier who fought in World War I is delighted after tracking down the family of the German officer who saved his great-grandfather's life almost a century ago.
Private Raymond Cullen was the only survivor of a Machine Gun Corps post hit by German artillery fire, in a battle to liberate the French town of Le Quesnoy in 1918.
Suffering serious injuries, he never made it back to friendly lines. He had started to lose consciousness when he was discovered by a German officer and his men.
The group of Germans had come to surrender, but upon finding Private Cullen, instead made a stretcher out of their tunics and carried the Kiwi back to his own base to get medical attention.
The German officer that enforced these orders left his wallet with the Kiwi defenceman, containing a family photo, ration card and the owner's name.
