The loss of three old houses in St Heliers last year is back to haunt the Auckland Council - this time over a lack of action to stop the wrecking ball destroying more of the seaside suburb.
Orakei Local Board chairwoman Desley Simpson yesterday gave the council a dressing down after learning there had been no changes to policy and procedures to prevent a repeat of the Turua St heritage issue.
"The mayor made a promise to St Heliers on behalf of Auckland Council, and that promise was that this situation would never happen again," Ms Simpson told the parks, recreation and heritage forum.
She said the local board passed a resolution last year asking for a report about changes to policy and only last week received a response to say nothing had happened.
If measures were to be included in a new unitary plan, she wanted to know what the community's options were following the sale of one of the last heritage buildings in St Heliers village last week - "probably for development".
