A missing hitchhiker has been found alive after a national appeal by police to track her down.
The 25-year-old overseas tourist made contact with police about midday, Detective Phil McDonnell said.
There were at least 30 tip-offs from members of the public reporting possible sightings of her after an appeal for information this morning.
Mr McDonnell said the hitchhiker was picked up at Little River yesterday evening and given a ride to Akaroa where she spent the night.
"We're quite satisfied she is safe and well and we do not have any further concerns for her safety or wellbeing."
