Inconsistency continues to plague Wairarapa United in the 2011 Central League football competition.
They looked set to pick up the maximum points when leading bottom-placed Palmerston North Marist1-0 at halftime in their match at Queen Elizabeth Park Oval in Masterton on Saturday after clearly having the better of the first 45 minutes.
However, lapses in concentration came back to haunt the home team in the second half and Palmerston North Marist managed the only goal of that spell to make it a 1-1 draw, and leave Wairarapa United now six points (or two wins) adrift of competition leaders Miramar Rangers.
Not helping the Wairarapa United cause either was the fact their players - and even more so their supporters - clearly became upset at some of the refereeing calls imposed on them through the course of the match, and especially in the second spell.
Coach Phil Keinzley declined to air his thoughts on the refereeing after and said Wairarapa United had themselves to blame for not at least retaining their halftime advantage.
"We dropped our focus and paid the penalty, we have to take it on the chin," he said.
At the same time though Keinzley was "more than happy" with the dominance achieved by Wairarapa United in the first half, both in terms of territory and possession, but unfortunately the old habit of not turning prime scoring chances into goals returned.
A goal to Adam Cowan had them 1-0 up at the break but on Keinzley's count they should have been three or four goals to the good of their opposition.
"We'd get ourselves into position to strike and we'd blow it. We weren't precise enough when it counted," he said.
Two Wairarapa United players to shine were Scott Robson and Miroslav Tvarohwho worked hard on attack and defence.
