The Dominion Post reported staff at Smiths City and Briscoes had problems with would-be looters soon after the quake struck.
Smiths City manager Carol McCartin said cars pulled up outside the store people tried to enter through a broken window. Staff were forced to confront people "after a cheap Christmas".
Witnesses said attempts were also made to steal goods from Briscoes.
